Sexual Trauma

Sexual trauma is a broad term used to describe any sexual act that is imposed on another person without their consent. This may be a one-time event or ongoing or long-term, and it is not necessarily physically violent. Examples include sexual assault, rape, stalking, harassment, and abuse.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 1 in 5 women in the United States are raped or sexually assaulted in their lifetime. There are also men and boys who suffer sexual trauma. Often times, the violation is by someone the person knows and trusts.

The impact of sexual trauma goes beyond any physical injuries. You may feel scared, ashamed, and alone. Relationships may feel dangerous or damaged. This is not uncommon, but there are tools for coping.

Recovering from sexual trauma takes time, and the process can be painful. You may be afraid to seek help. This too is a normal reaction. No matter how difficult it may seem, seeking professional therapy can help you learn to heal and move on with your life.
